Growing up on the Westside presented unique challenges for Glenn and his son Tahj. As black men, they were aware of the dangers lurking in their neighborhood – the rising crime rates, the temptation of drugs, and the influence of gang violence. Despite their best efforts to stay positive, Tahj found himself on the brink of making a wrong choice.
It happened one evening when Tahj encountered a group of older boys who seemed to have it all figured out. They flaunted their flashy clothes, talked about easy money, and bragged about their connections in the neighborhood. Temptation of that type of life was offered to Tahj, a peek into their lifestyle – a shortcut to success that promised excitement and money.
Glenn’s heart sank when he learned about Tahj’s encounter. He knew he had to intervene before it was too late. Determined to steer Tahj away from the wrong path, Glenn organized a community sports event. He invited Tahj and his friends, along with other neighborhood kids, to participate in friendly competitions and team-building activities.
Initially skeptical, Tahj’s friends hesitated to join. But Glenn’s persistence and unwavering support eventually won them over. As Tahj’s friends immersed themselves in the camaraderie of sports, they discovered a sense of belonging and purpose that they had been missing. Music was another avenue through which Glenn and Tahj’s friends connected. With the help of their friend Cano, they spent hours in the studio, creating beats and writing lyrics that expressed their experiences and aspirations, keeping them out of trouble and busy, being creative. Glenn saw music as a way to channel Tahj and his friends energy creatively and provide an outlet for self-expression.
In addition to sports and music, Glenn involved Tahj and his friends in his landscaping business. Together, they worked hard, tending to gardens and beautifying their community. Glenn taught them the value of hard work, responsibility, and taking pride in one’s craftsmanship. He even gifted Tahj his own set of tools, symbolizing the passing down of knowledge and skills from one generation to the next.
Through it all, Glenn made sure to instill in Tahj the values and principles of life that his own father had instilled in him.
